Oh, high school.

I'm thinking of adding a new weekly post in addition to Thankful Thursday called "Oh, high school". Hopefully this will give you some insight to the ridiculous life of a high school teacher.

Student 1: No Child Left Behind was, like, the worst idea in American history.
Student 2: Umm, what about Japanese internment camps?
Student 1: Well, yeah. And, like, the Holocaust.
Student 2: Dude, you know that wasn't in  America, right?

A student unknowingly wrote fart instead of order on his Spanish assignment.

Student: What's an answering machine? Like, I think I know, but I forget.
(Her peers explain it to her)
Student: Oh yeah, like for when people used to have house phones.

This girl left out the r in sweat-shirt on her French essay:

In my French class of 6 students:
Me: Does anyone need a laptop to work on their presentation today?
Student 1: No thanks, I brought my own.
Student 2: Nah, I can use my iPad.
Student 3: Yeah, me too.
Student 4: I think I'll just use my phone.
Student 5: Yep, me too.
Student 6: gets out book like he's from the Stone Age

During a one-on-one conversation after school, a student inadvertently said the F word while reading aloud to me in Spanish.

Oh, and one of my students is on AMERICAN IDOL ... nbd. The only reason she doesn't go to Vegas is because she didn't get proper approval through the district. What?!

Ahh, the sweet life of a high school teacher :)

Thankful Thursday

Today I'm thankful...

- that a sick baby = a snugly baby. I've been taking full advantage!

- that we're sleeping a little more than we were last weekend.

- that my job isn't boring. I wasn't even phased when a student told me (straight faced) that he used the name Carlos Spicyweiner to register for our online textbook last year and asked if I would know it was him.

- that a different student truly didn't know what he was saying when he muttered merde (shit) under his breath. I may or may not have laughed. out. loud. Poor thing turned bright red when his table partner explained it to him, then politely apologized.

- for a super awesome letter in the mail with super awesome pics of Rob when he was a nugget. Some people just know how to make your day!

- that Huston is filling out a little. He doesn't have those baby rolls at all but our little string bean is gettin' cuter by the day! #biased

- that Rob's calf is healing quicker than expected.

- for the birds chirping outside the other morning. Oh, wait, it was just the wind.

Thankful Thursday

Today I'm thankful...

- for a great weekend in Glenwood! I wish I would've taken even one picture to show you how much fun we had.

- for Iowa Assessments this week. Yes, I'm probably the only one! I love how the alternate schedule makes January go faster.

- that Huston had no trouble with green veggies. He wolfed down a whole container of green beans and on the first try each!

- for a pair of pants that sort of fits. Obviously I also bought them in black and obviously I wear one of them every. single. day.

- for the way Huston splashes like crazy in the bath! He's always had fun but it's on a whole new level now. I can't wait for him to swim at the hotel in a couple weeks!

- that another 2 hour delay = more snuggle time with the babe.

- for our fireplace and garage spots.

- that Huston isn't crawling yet, even though he's thisclose. He's at such a good stage and I'm just not ready for the floodgates to open. Stay lidda, buddy.

- for a recent reminder that I am doing things right. It's no secret that I'm my own worst critic and have a tendency to be a perfectionist so it was nice to have a little reality check.

- that my mom´s check-up went well yesterday and that Huston got to log some quality cousin time. A screen shot of my IG should show you what I mean:

- again, for sleep! We're heading in the right direction and that's good news, folks.

Thankful Thursday

Today I'm thankful...

- that I'm nursing. I'm thankful that I (still) can and that I enjoy it. Thanks to the fellow moms in my life who supported me at the beginning when it wasn't so easy.

- for good genes. I've had no trouble losing the baby weight (see above). Actually, I'm even well under pre-baby weight. How snotty does that sound?

- for the extended Christmas break. Yeah yeah yeah, I'm a little behind but it really was fantastic!

- another wonderful surprise from Rob. He's always finding ways to brighten my day and he really outdid himself this time. Homemade single-serve warm chocolate chip cookie topped with ice cream and chocolate. He  even told me well ahead of time he had something special for me (building anticipation is the name of the game for him) then made me close my eyes as he expertly prepared it. Y.U.M. I'm not sure I breathed until it was gone!

- for an upcoming trip to Glenwood. We're certainly due!

- that Huston is movin' and groovin'. He's ready to take off!

- that his 6 month check up went well. I was bursting with pride as the pediatrician remarked how amazing and advanced he was (ok, maybe those are my words...). I'm also glad shots went well and that we were able to have a nice afternoon together afterwards. We even got to take a walk outside!

Thankful Thursday

Today I'm thankful...

- to be back into blogging! I was feeling guilty about my lack of documenting his first 6 months (video/blog/baby book/etc.) but realized it's because I've been in the moment with him. I quite frankly didn't have time for both, and I'm not sure if I will this semester, but I'm going to try harder!

- that Rob is in a bball men's league. He's in his element, folks!

- for some fresh changes at school. Altering the smallest thing can have a major impact and I'm optimistic about the rest of the school year.

- that Huston's crying gave Rob a technical the other night when he was playing Xbox. Is that a weird thing to be thankful for? Actually, I don't care- it's hilarious.

- for the way Huston smiles with his whole body! His laughs have been getting louder and his hugs tighter and I love every minute of it! Rob is thankful that he gets the best/easiest response of anyone. :) He's also super ticklish which makes me laugh!

- that Rob is a chiropractor. Can you imagine being comfortable sleeping like this? Huston loves being adjusted an even giggles and smiles each time!

- even when he pinches my neck and grabs a handful of my hair. Seriously, it hurts.

- for our very clearly defined roles of mother and father. Rob is the fun one and I'm the soothing, calming, snuggling one. Neither of us would have it any other way! Except when he was supposed to be putting Huston down and he gave him a toy in his crib instead which meant I had to be the mean one and take it away.

- for the way he wolfs down his food. I think he hasn't eaten the whole container only once or twice. I'm also glad we started with veggies. He loves carrots and sweet potatoes. Squash, you're next!

- Rob's enthusiasm, diligence, and desire to buy a house. Realistically it's not gonna happen for at least a year but he's so ready to move on (see what I did there?) that he has done and redone our budget at least 1634427993 times.

- SLEEP! I saved the best for last. Overnight Huston went 9hr15min between feedings!!! What?!!?! I can't even begin to tell you how pleased I was. Here's to hoping it continues!

Guess who's back....

I'm baaaaaaack!

So, it's been almost exactly 6 months since I last posted but not much has really happened in our lives. OH, WAIT. We had a baby, moved out of state, both got new jobs within the first few weeks and have been trying to catch our breath ever since!

I'd love to start adding some retroactive posts to the blog, but I also had intentions of that last Christmas and it's harder than it sounds. The good news is that while I STILL haven't really written in his baby book, I have kept a "journal" in my phone of every day since he was born. (Except days 3, 4, 5. Those were pretty crazy. More on that later though. Hopefully.) Here's to a new year!

My apologies, dear readers!

Shout-out to my sweet seester Laura Kay for being my craziest most faithful blog follower. Thanks for checking it multiple times every day even during a 6 month drought.
